Crypto Lending Risk and Security: How to Protect Your Money
Every crypto loan and every lending yield carries risk. Some risks come from the market, some from the platform and some from people trying to steal your money. This hub explains the main ones and how to reduce them.
The main risk types
| Risk | What happens | Who is exposed |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidation | Collateral is sold when its value falls too far | Borrowers |
| Counterparty / insolvency | A centralized lender freezes withdrawals or fails | Lenders and borrowers using CeFi platforms |
| Smart contract | A bug or exploit drains a protocol | DeFi lenders and borrowers |
| Oracle | A wrong price triggers bad liquidations or bad debt | DeFi users |
| Stablecoin | The token you hold or lend loses its peg | Anyone holding stablecoins |
| Fraud and scams | Fake platforms, phishing and impersonation | Everyone |
Market risk: liquidation
For borrowers, the most common way to lose money is liquidation. Keep your loan-to-value well below the liquidation threshold and know how you would add collateral quickly. See LTV and liquidation explained.
Platform risk
Centralized lenders hold your assets, so their solvency matters. Several large lenders froze withdrawals during the 2022 market downturn. DeFi protocols remove that company risk but add code risk; see smart contract risk.
Scams
Fake lending sites, “guaranteed” yields, impersonated support agents and phishing links are common. Our guide to crypto lending scams lists the warning signs.
A basic security checklist
- Use a hardware wallet or a well-reviewed wallet for larger amounts; see crypto wallets.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone, including “support”.
- Bookmark the official site of every platform you use and access it only through the bookmark.
- Revoke token approvals you no longer need.
- Spread funds across platforms and keep part of your assets outside any lending product.
- Read audits, but do not treat them as a guarantee.
When to be careful
Be most careful when rates look much higher than elsewhere, when a platform pressures you to act fast, or when anyone asks for your seed phrase. These are the most reliable warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Liquidation during a sharp price drop, which sells your collateral at a bad moment.
It replaces company risk with code risk. Neither is risk-free; the right choice depends on what you can check and monitor.
Guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, unknown platforms and requests for private keys are the clearest signs.
